About The Client
The client, a global news and content provider, supplying real-time articles, multimedia assets, and metadata to broadcasters, publishers, and digital platforms worldwide.

The Challenge
Despite the widespread adoption of NewsML standards, no U.S. English variant of the Media Topics taxonomy existed. This posed a significant hurdle for the organization’s metadata consistency, classification systems, and cross-platform publishing tools.
The client needed a custom-built solution that aligned with international standards but reflected the linguistic and cultural nuances of American journalism.
What We Did
Honeytree led the research, localization, and editorial refinement of a complete U.S. English version of the NewsML Media Topics taxonomy. The team ensured accuracy, relevance, and standards compliance—culminating in a successful submission to the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC).
The Results
Honeytree delivered a fully localized taxonomy that met the client’s needs and filled a key gap in global media standards. The submission was accepted by the IPTC, enabling the organization to implement consistent, U.S.-specific metadata across its platforms. This advancement also positioned the client as a contributor to international journalistic infrastructure.
What Set Honeytree Apart
The success of the project hinged on Honeytree’s blend of technical precision, editorial expertise, and standards compliance. Their collaborative approach ensured alignment with both the client’s goals and IPTC requirements—delivering a lasting solution to an industry-wide problem.
